The Story of GTA V begins in North Yankton in 2004, where Michael Townley, Trevor Philips, and Brad Snider, a team of master heist players, attempt a high-stakes robbery. However, things go south quickly. The FIB (the GTA equivalent of the FBI) intervenes, leading to chaos. The FIB shoots Brad and seemingly Michael as well. Trevor manages to escape into the mist. Michael is presumed dead after a public funeral, but in reality, he betrays his friends, faking his death to secure witness protection from FIB agent Dave Norton. This deal allows Michael to erase his criminal record and start a new life for the sake of his family.
Michael’s New Life
Nine years later, in 2013, Michael now lives in Los Santos under the name Michael De Santa. Despite his wealth and a big house, his family dynamics are strained, and therapy sessions are a regular occurrence. This new chapter sets the stage for the Story of GTA V, where past and present collide.
Franklin’s Entry in GTA V
Franklin Clinton and his friend Lamar Davis work for a corrupt car salesman. One day, Franklin is sent to repossess a car Michael’s son, Jimmy, purchased. Unbeknownst to Franklin, Michael is hiding in the car. Michael orders Franklin to crash it into the dealership in retaliation. This act costs Franklin his job, but it sparks a friendship between the two. Shortly after, Franklin helps Michael rescue Jimmy, showcasing his driving skills. Michael discovers his wife Amanda is cheating on him with her tennis coach. Enraged, he and Franklin chase the coach to a mansion and destroy it. Eventually, Trevor tracks Michael down, but their reunion is strained. Michael’s family leaves him during this time, adding to his troubles and heightening the tension in the Story of GTA V.
FIB vs. IAA: The Story of GTA V’s Intriguing Conspiracies
The FIB forces Michael, Trevor, Franklin, and Lester to conduct a series of illegal jobs, including robbing a bank and stealing a nerve agent from the IAA. During these missions, Michael cleverly deletes his own crime records, securing a way out of Haines’ control. These missions form some of the most gripping moments in the story.

Michael pursues his dream of becoming a movie producer by working with Richard Solomon. However, Devin Weston, a millionaire, tries to sabotage the project for an insurance payout. The Union Depository Heist: The Biggest Job in the Story of GTA V
Trevor kidnaps Madrazo’s wife after a dispute. To smooth things over, Michael convinces Trevor to return her and plans the Union Depository Heist, the biggest job of their careers. Franklin handles Trevor’s rivals, Trevor eliminates Steve Haines, and Michael deals with Franklin’s rival, Harold. Finally, they confront Weston and end his chapter for good.

With their records erased by Dave Norton, Michael, Trevor, and Franklin part ways, free to live their lives. The story concludes with the trio remaining friends, having overcome betrayal, heists, and personal challenges to carve out new paths for themselves.
